Having said that, it is my opinion (with all due respect) that the real King of Rock N Roll is not Elvis Presley but rather Chuck Berry. Now that title has no actual official quality nor is it really tangible and perhaps for Chuck Berry the title "Father of Rock N Roll" may actually be more appropriate but none the less I feel that Chuck doesn't get his necessary due as the person in the history of music who had the greatest impact and influence on the development and future of Rock N Roll. Elvis may have brought the music to the masses but Chuck Berry made the music that had the most influence on the following generations of musicians like the Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

My pics of Wolf were in the Pantheon Press bio, "Moanin' at Midnight" and in the McGwin DVD/Movie "The Howlin' Wolf Story (The Secret History of Rock & Roll."

I also played drums for Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FATHER OF ROCK & ROLL (although Wolf influenced more bands directly), Mance Lispcomb, Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee, and some harp lessons from Sonny and Paul Oscher.

I'm currently hoping to have some good working band produce stuff I originally wrote upon Wolf's request but that he didn't get to hear in time. Recently I found the 2 songs Wolf and I did together, just us, in his hotel room... his acoustic full-song country harp is super rockin' and puts to rest forever that lame Musselwhite comment about how "Wolf only knew 5 notes but played them well"... He just happened to have the style and taste to play what was needed and nothing beyond to clutter the vive of his songs... This (on my tapes) is stuff you can't find on his albums... it's him doing the entire (sole) melody, acoustically... and he works it ... it was in part his way of teaching me harp, he told me... to get those licks down... the licks are incredible, the tone is Wolf's own... can't be copied

I can sound somewhat (on harp) like Sonny Boy (II, Rice Miller) who taught Wolf harp, but not as much like Wolf.. but at this age and after lotsa unusual stuff in my life and maybe my testosterone supplementation post mercury poisoning (probably not that heheheh but it doenst hurt to have it ) I can SING very close to how Wolf sang, if I choose to, also taught myself Tuvan throat singing to some degree, not as far as Paul Pengas but I have a way of doing it I plan to use with rock songs in 2008. I started learning harp by playing along with Sonny Boy Williamson (the original) songs and use that older style with some songs when doing concerts .. been away from concerts for a while since giving up playing with Mike Wilhelm, for whom I wrote 3 songs on the Mean Ol Frisco album and played harp on 7 tracks. in the 80's.. hoping to get back into it at last... soon, only doing originals or with a rare cover here and there.

I write and play most genres of music all roots style: folk, rock, blues, country, etc... and some that are kind of unclassifiable but sort of combine klezmer blues and r & b ballads I suppose.

Finally, about Wolf... Wolf's multi-dimensional talents and power plus his creative foresight and tight band leadership allowed him to expand Delta blues beyond even Chicago style, incorporating elements of Tex-Mex, Neo-jazz and Rock and making powerful statements that are with us still, and still as powerful! Be sure to see my site and read the story... it says it much better and a lot more...

Email me to discuss the mighty Wolf, blues or to my photos, etc. OR if you want to help me get some demo songs produced low-cost that could also be stand-alone sales online or at concerts too... ( SF Bay Area CA )

Best to all,

Howlin' Sandy

Last weekend I saw the new Neil Young movie, "Heart Of Gold", directed by Jonathan Demme ("Silence of the Lambs", "Philadelphia"). For anyone who is a fan of Neil Young's music, this movie is a must-see! It is very well done. The movie was filmed back in August at the legendary Ryman Auditorium in Nashville and features Young and his backing band--featuring Pegi Young, Ben Keith, Spooner Oldham, Rick Rosas, Chad Cromwell, etc.--performing his latest album, "Prairie Wind". He also pulls out a few surprises. The way it was shot and the way the DTS surround sound track was mixed, it made me and my friends feel as if we were right there at the concert.

If anyone has a chance to see it, do yourself a favor and go!

A far cry from the ordinary spot and marker before which was just like all the rest except for the guitar sign on it. I live in the same city of Renton, south of Seattle and Jimmie's grave still draws a lot of visitors from the U.S. , Europe, Australia and Japan todate.
There is also a bronze Hendrix kneeling with guitar by (hip) Broadway up in Seattle and of course the Hendrix Experience at the Space Needle Center up in Queen Anne arrea of Seattle.
Its amazing after all the years Jimmy still rocks, I sweared I heard his guitar the last time I was at his grave last summer or maybe it was just that kid playing his strat under a shaded tree nearby.

A) KDKB purchased the website name "Moving933.com." This is a format currently failing miserably in the Northwest (see www.movin925.com)

B) If you go there today, you will see a picture of a Mexican cactus with a sombrero playing a guitar. Underneath it is morse code that translates to "Oye Como Va," which aside from being a name for a Santana song, translates to "See how it goes."

C) The picture and message here has changed daily. The messages have included everything from "We're just kidding; KDKB isn't going anywhere") to "Crazy Dave Otto (a long-forgotten morning man here in the Valley) is coming back to Phoenix!"

In short, the rock and roll is going away for crap music you'll forget as soon as they stop playing it.

Wow. Back when I first moved to Phoenix, KDKB was the biggest station in town: Free-form radio, more interested in the musical tastes of its jocks than trying to make millions of dollars. And while it went more mainstream as the 80s came to be, over time KDKB always remained the place to go to listen to classic rock in Phoenix, mixed with better, current stuff.

I know the station was sold recently, but it was a real shock to turn on the station this morning only to hear the first 40 minutes of "The Wall," uninterrupted, followed by a recorded announcement thanking listeners for "a great 35 years."

Just goes to show you nothing lasts anymore...
For a record I've been so familiar with since I was a teen long ago, this record hasn't faded with time one bit. This album is the perfect example of what every live band should be. The Who had BALLS.
As a result of a medical insult, he'd been in a deep coma since last November 21, but was still struggling to recover. He died at Shea Scottsdale Hospital in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he'd lived for the last couple of years.
Billy was called the Fifth Beatle because he played keyboards on "Let It Be," "The White Album" and "Abbey Road." He also played on the Rolling Stones' hit song "Miss You," and often played with Eric Clapton. He also did the organ work on Sly & the Family Stone's greatest hits.
A few days ago I bought and heard for the first time Spirit's "Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus".
Awesome record, I enjoy it very much.
For some reason, Spirit always was under the radar for me, since I was a teenager, I've always heard "of" them, the only tune I was familiar with was their "Fresh Garbage".
I love discovering old material that I totally missed out on as a youngster, this one delivered for sure.
I also bought Johnny Winter's "Progressive Blues Experiment" recording as well, this one blows me away, I'm totally cooking to this one.

Hey group,
So many for me...

The Beates: "I Want To Hold Your Hand" I heard this in a music class at 11 years old. I'd never heard such happy music in my life! I tried to keep that melody in my head the rest of the day, trying not to let go of it. This started a life-long love of the group.

The Beatles: "Introducing The Beatles: I'm a huge Beatles fan, this was the 1st record I ever bought, ever. This record moved me so much, I played it 2 or 3 times in a row. "Twist and Shout" I thought I was gonna die when I heard it!

Jimi Hendrix: "Red House" This tune is responsible for me loving the Blues. I found a copy of "Smash Hits" in someones trash, I took it home because I never heard this tune. It started me off on the right track straightaway.

Jimi Hendrix: Third Stone from the Sun" I could barely move when this track came on, I was 15 years old. I sat on the edge of my bad, not moving, I stared at the stereo speakers, I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

The Who: "Live at Leeds" Man, what a fuckin' great album! The energy and dynamics on this record are untouched. This is The Who in all their glory, it ROCKS.

Cream: "Disraeli Gears" I was 14 years old, and I got this as a birthday present, it totally opened me up to so much more Rock 'n Roll. It felt like a rite of passage.

Allman Brothers: "Statesboro Blues" I heard this on the radio as a teeenager when i was unloading a truck at work. I heard the slide solo and it blew me away. I HAD to go find that record!

Traffic: "Mr. Fantasy" I never heard anything like this when I 1st bought it. I played it everyday for months before going off to school.

Sex Pistols: "Never Mind The Bollocks" What can I say, this opened the doors to totally different music for me. Great album.

Muddy Waters: "Muddy Mississippi Waters Live" This was the 1st Blues record I ever got, I was in love from then on.

The Doors: The 1st album. It would take me too long to write about how this record changed my life.

These are just a few, otherwise i'd be writing all day. I'd like to read yours.

Hi group,
Today I heard a great cd a friend of mine had at work, called "Rod Stewart: The 60's Sessions"
The earliest recordings by Rod that I'd been familiar with, are his classics with the Jeff beck Group.
The Jeff Beck album "Truth" forever changed my previously low opinions of Rod Stewart. As a teen-ager in the lates '70's early 80's, most of what you heard of Rod on the radio were crap like "Do ya think I'm sexy?" etc..
With the exception of his Beck recordings, some early solo work, and his work with the Faces, most of his solo recording career was less than inspiring to me. Mostly, it sounded lazy and half-assed, like he enjoyed being a celebrity more than being the good musician he once was.
Anyway, hearing the "60's Sessions" today, I was confronted with the Rod Stewart that once was.
How could a man with this much talent have eventually chosen to do the crap he eventually chose to do?
On the 60's sessions, here was Rod Stewart in full-flight, "Rod The Mod" with the Blues-Rasp voice anyone would have killed to have. Here he was doing Sam Cooke, Otis Redding etc... yet sounding like himself, an inspired, passionate self.
This is a great cd, I didn't have the booklet of liner notes to go by, but from the sound of it, I'm sure it was pre-Jeff Beck by a few years. These recordings sounded like a mixture of the Yardbirds, and The Animals, ripp-roaring British R 'n B to the fullest. As big of a Yardbirds fan I am, I couldn't help but think "How they would have sounded with Stewart as a front-man instead of Keith Relf?"
If you love Rod Stewart, get this cd, if you can't stand him but love great British R 'n B, get this cd and it'll change your mind about Rod Stewart right away.

Hey, all: One of my hobbies is that I collect rock music video -- not MTV videos, mind you, but shows and movies and specials of concerts, memorable performances, etc.

I recently picked up a neat DVD called (I swear this is the official name of the show):

The !!!! Beat Vol.1.

If you like 60's soul, you need to check these DVDs out. (I'm planning to get at least one more; there are six volumes in all).

The !!!! Beat was a syndicated TV show that ran in 1966 and featured mostly Texas and Memphis-based soul singers. It was hosted by a well-known (in Tennsessee) DJ named "Hoss" Allen, and produced at a studio in Dallas, TX.

The shows are the most interesting mix of live, lipsynched and live-with-backing tracks performances I think I've ever seen. Filmed on obviously a shoestring budget, the performances on the disc I have are just fantastic (Little Walter, Joe Tex, Etta James, Gatemouth Brown and more).

Rather unintentionally funny is the varying state of sobriety from show to show displayed by the host, who, sadly, had a bit of a drinking problem. (Apparently on Vol 6, the last show of the series had to be hosted by Otis Redding, because ol' "Hoss" got a little too tipsy.)

Anyway, this is easily the most interesting video find I've had this year. These DVD's aren't cheap (about $30 each) but they are definitely worth it! Highly recommended!

The picture has been restored pretty well and Tony Visconti remixed the original 16-track tapes, so the sound is very clear.

You should at least check this out. As if that wasn't enough, they have even included the concert used in the film....uncut, in its entirety. Plus, they even have included three or four hours of bonus features, including the only TV appearance of Tyrannosaurus Rex in '67.

I don't think anybody is quite prepared for how good The Mighty Rearranger turns out to be! Classic rock star solo LPs can get so overrated at the time of their release, only to never quite measure up to the legendary cream of yore. I've only listened to it twice, but I already know that I'll return to the new Robert Plant (and the Strange Sensation) CD many times. Great rock albums have both polish and spontaneity - this one's got it. His passion, Eastern sounds, and rocking hooks all combine gracefully this time for a sound that belongs to Robert's new band alone. The covers album they did a couple of years ago was a strong warm-up to this event, and, amazingly, the modernism in the new stuff doesn't compromise the ethic. We could quibble about earlier solo outings by our ever-lovin' blues-wailin' global philospher, but for now I'd just like to know which other Zep fans have rushed right out to hear it, and what they think.

This album was recorded on the road, partly on stage and partly in hotel rooms and I remember at the end of the first side you can hear Mr Browne snort a big rail of cocaine and almost gag and talk about "having a clear mind" with whomever is in the room with him.

The copy I found in a thrift store was a later presssing (yellow and black label instead of sky blue asylum label) AND THAT PART WAS EDITED OUT!

I do understand the impact they had when they came to the United States. However, to dub them "The Greatest Band in the Land" and to have a 2-3 hour show of just Beatles every week, like a certain radio station in the area???

Enlighten me. If you seperate the mania- and judge them solely on their music, are they really the best ever?

Last night, I picked up the new Faces box set. "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar..." is what it's called and it's well worth it. It has four CD's which contain everything from their first rehearsals in 1969 to their final recording session in '75. Even B-sides, unreleased cuts, outtakes, BBC sessions, demos and tons of tracks from the actual albums, selected by none other than Ian McLagan himself!

And now for my opinion:
Without the late Rob Tyner, I can't see these guys being any good at all. There was something awesome about the old MC5... how they used to be so sloppy and raw, and so energetic- I can't see the new 5 being anywhere near as interesting. How rockin can these old-farts be? And by now, they probably learned how to play their instruments... that sux.

Any thoughts?
