The King of Rock N Roll

First a disclaimer, I am 29 years of age and I clearly was not alive at the time of the birth of rock n roll but I have spent alot of time listening and studying history and I would like to begin a discussion...

Having said that, it is my opinion (with all due respect) that the real King of Rock N Roll is not Elvis Presley but rather Chuck Berry. Now that title has no actual official quality nor is it really tangible and perhaps for Chuck Berry the title "Father of Rock N Roll" may actually be more appropriate but none the less I feel that Chuck doesn't get his necessary due as the person in the history of music who had the greatest impact and influence on the development and future of Rock N Roll. Elvis may have brought the music to the masses but Chuck Berry made the music that had the most influence on the following generations of musicians like the Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Please share your opinions...

I guess it depends how you define "King." True, Elvis didn't invent rock-n-roll. I wouldn't even credit Chuck Berry with that. But Elvis did take control of it, and helped make it popular.

Keep in mind, the King doesn't necessarily discover a land. He merely rules it, which Elvis clearly did for some time. Then came the pills in one hand...pork chops in the other...Vegas, baby...and then the King dies on his throne. Shakespeare couldn't have written it any better.

I would have to disagree with Chuck Berry being the King of rock & roll, sure he did write good music but it's not like he wrote all of Elvis' songs, only a select few were actually covered. If that's the case then Carl Perkins should be considered "The King" since he wrote Blue Suede shoes. Also I think Chuck Berry's songs all sound relativley the same, especially his solo's. Elvis not only sang but was an actor, he was a jack of all trades, what made him famous was not only the music, but the man himself.

Elvis was billed as 'king of rock and roll' back in the day, so deciding to change that after 50 years is just gonna confuse people. That said, mahy classic rockers, evryone from Keith Richards to the Beach Boys would never have picked up a guitar if it weren't for Chuck Berry.

The last line sums up my point exactly. Let me put it another way going along with what I and others have said - Elvis influenced the fans and brought african-american R&B mixed with country and rockabilly to the white audience while chuck berry, bo diddley and others but most importantly chuck berry influenced the developing musicians that would define the golden era of rock n roll. I'm not interested in who gets the title of "king", but rather who is more influential in the development of rock music, for me that person is Chuck Berry. Some people may think his songs sound the same, and there are alot of songs with similar riffs but listen again and listen to some of the obsucre songs and you may change your opinion of Chuck Berry. Elvis was great and his presence, popularity and influence cannot be denied. In the end rock n roll is all that matters and even though today's music is generally shit we can always go back to the "classics".

My apologies for the confusion. I thought you were suggesting "that the real King of Rock N Roll is not Elvis Presley but rather Chuck Berry."

If you are simply suggesting that Chuck Berry deserves more credit as a pioneer of rock n roll and an influence on many great artists, then I surely would agree. But I would also note that he is just one of several key figures, including the likes of Muddy Waters and Howlin Wolf.

I totally agree with that, Chuck Berry most certainly deserves credit for being a musical "influence" to Elvis, and a lot of the Blues artists deserve credit for Elvis' popularity.

Perhaps the Berry Boosters can take comfort in the fact that Elvis never made it into outer space. But NASA's Voyager probe contained a golden record with Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode as Track 7.

Which, of course, could explain why so many UFOs have been spotted "deep down in Louisiana, close to New Orleans, way back up in the woods, among the evergreens..."

hahah! thats awesome! when you put it that way, good ol'Chuck made it to space, which reminds me, isn't it funny that some people actually think that Elvis is an alien? priceless. =^_^=

If and when they hear that record in space whoever it is they will probably want to hear more. I'm very comfortable with the fact that Chuck Berry is one of our first ambassadors to the extra-terrestrial community. If nothing else they would know we are fun here on Earth.

lmao Little Richard has been trying for as long as I can remember. Didn't he make a grandstand about it once hosting Grammys?

Elvis Presley IS the true King of Rock 'n Roll.
I love Chuck Berry too, he was a great pioneer and founding father of Rock, but he was no where near as diverse a performer as Elvis. No fucking way.
Chuck Berry never, ever, strayed far from the rhythm and blues format. He was a brilliant writer and lyricist, but he stayed with what was comfortable. Remember, his pianist Johnny Johnson had a hand in writing a lot of that material. If you don't believe me, go watch "Hail Hail Rock 'n Roll" again.
Nothing before existed like what Elvis did, because he was white, and because what music forms he fused together. Country, Rhythm and Blues, Gospel, and most importantly, his biggest vocal inspiration "Dean Martin" and Italian vocalist "Mario Lanza." No one ever would have thought to put all of this together into what we knew as Elvis. The King's brilliance was that he brought all that he loved in music, into his music. As a performer, he oozed like a volcano and exploded like napalm, just watch his performances on early television in "Elvis '56."
That's what gave credability to his best music, he was sincere because he LOVED what he did. Even when he was fucked up, he loved music. He still would have sang even if he lived under a bridge.
Elvis was the ultimate rocker because for a time, he believed what he did, and he was larger than life because of that, not because a bunch of bull-shit rock journalists said he was great.
Too many people choose to believe in the MYTH of Elvis, fuck that, listen to the music. If anyone here can listen to Elvis' Sun Records collection, or killer tunes like "Little Sister" "King Creole" and anything he did before his stint in the army, if this material doesn't kick you in the ass, then there's no hope for you.
There's a reason why everyone from The Beatles to Led Zeppelin WORSHIPPED Elvis.

Yes, EP has been dubbed the King of Rock&Roll, but I find it weird since he actually wrote so few of his biggest hits. Most of them were not only covers, they were covers made almost immediately after the originals hit. I think the media machine, especially film and television, put him way out in front of those he was actually emulating. I am not saying Elvis was unoriginal. I am just saying he was a short leep from those who influenced him. And if guitar is the septre of Rock's king.. well...?

I think you make a great point. I have always wondered how he seems to get left out of lists of Top So-and-So rockers. And Chuck Berry is still very much alive. A living legend.

I'd like to add that somehow, Little Richard -- self-proclaimed Architect of Rock n Roll -- is so often overlooked, when he broke so much new ground with his style and flamboyance. I think he deserves more props for being one of the first most outrageous rockers! He very much foreshadowed the glam rockers to shock the public like Bowie and Iggy.

Have you seen Little Richard in one of those new Geico commercials? ... cracks me up! It's probably on YouTube somewhere.
